I was pleased with the rather esoteric result when the painting was finished. Without the grey birch just right of centre the painting is without vitality or interest. The long trunk of the young European White Birch becomes a cooling element on the eye, which soothes the senses amongst the blaze of hot colour in the rest of the painting.
